The Royal Agricultural College (RAC), now the Royal Agricultural University (RAU), is the oldest agricultural college in the English speaking world and has been at the forefront of agricultural education since 1845.

The BSc (Hons) in International Business Management provides you with a thorough grounding in general business management and the opportunity to study particular themes in greater depth.

The course will equip you with the analytical and problem-solving skills required within a business context. A great deal of time is spent developing communication and presentation skills, which are particularly vital in most work environments.

You will complete a 20-week work placement in the second year of the course, which will strengthen your experience and enhance your attractiveness for employers. You will become savvy with business and management through experience gained during the placement period.

Our graduates have gone on to pursue a wide range of careers within business management internationally. You will have the opportunity to work within a range of sectors, including general management, consultancy, finance, public administration, media and event management.

For the duration of the programme you will have associate membership of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Upon graduation, as well as the Royal Agricultural University BSc. (Hons) you will also be awarded a Diploma in Management and
Leadership from the Chartered Management Institute.

CMI is the only chartered professional body in the UK dedicated to promoting the highest standards in management and leadership excellence. CMI qualifications are highly regarded by employers and demonstrate the practical skills needed to perform in the workplace.

This degree is also accredited by the Chartered Association of Business Schools.

Course details

The course will be delivered through lectures, tutorials, visiting lecturers, student and tutor-led seminars, directed reading, problem-based and experiential learning, and case studies. The development of teamwork skills and written and oral presentations are emphasised, especially during the final year of the course. You will have access to visiting speakers, drawn from industry associates of the RAU.

Modules are assessed through a range of coursework, including essays, reports, presentations, tests, group work, etc. There are timed, unseen examinations at the end of each year.

The Research Project is an integral part of the course. It provides the opportunity to study in-depth a subject of specific interest or of direct relevance to employment aspirations.

This BSc (Hons) degree, when taken with the marketing electives, has been accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) to provide direct entry onto the CIM’s Professional Diploma in Marketing.

Work placement

You will complete a 20-week work placement in your second year, following completion of the Easter term examinations. Additionally, you can opt to complete a full year in employment between your second and third year. You can apply for placements relevant to your interests and aspirations, and may choose to link these to your choice of electives in the final year or proposed dissertation topic.

Our students have secured a wide variety of challenging work experience opportunities, both nationally and internationally. Work experience helps in the development of a range of skills that are appropriate for future employment and such contacts and networking can prove invaluable.

Alternatively, you may be encouraged to set up your own businesses with assistance from our Enterprise Centre during the work placement period, which some continue successfully after graduation.

There are two types of accommodation you can choose:

1. Homestay
If you want to fully immerse yourself in English culture then you may enjoy homestay accommodation. You will live with a local family with breakfast and an evening meal included. On Sundays, lunch will also be included.

Homestay hosts may be older people whose children have left home, they may be a full family with children, they may be a younger couple or single people: the school has over 200 hosts in the city, so the school will always try to place you in a suitable home.

The homestay department spend a lot of time and care finding the host families and the homestay co-ordinator is in school every day in case you have any questions or difficulties. The school listens to your preferences (some people don’t want to live with pets, for example) and the school can also cater for special diets, e.g. vegetarian or halal.

Most of the homestays are situated in the suburbs and are 20-40 minutes from the city centre by public transport [bus or train]. The school has no homestays in the city centre. All families have been visited by the school and had a security check.
